Pre-loved baby gear: how to buy safely
Buying second-hand is often the most sustainable choice, and premium pushchairs can cost far less used. But some baby gear is fine to buy used and some isn't. Here's how to tell, based on UK safety guidance.
| Item | Buy pre-loved? | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Pushchair / buggy | Yes, with checks | Fold, wheels, brakes, harness stitching, cracks in the frame, BS EN 1888 label, recalls (Which?) |
| Car seat | Avoid | "Never buy these items second-hand unless you are assured of their history." Only from a relative or friend you know well, if you know its full history and it hasn't been damaged (RoSPA) |
| Clothes and slings | Usually | Wash before use; check sling buckles and stitching |
| Travel cot | Frame yes, mattress new | Check locks and mesh; a new, well-fitting mattress is the usual advice |
Pushchair checklist (from Which?)
- Buy where you can inspect it: "collection only" is ideal.
- Ask for photos of any scratches or wear.
- Fold and unfold it several times.
- Check that the wheels aren't loose and that pneumatic tyres aren't cracking.
- Test the brake on a slope.
- Get the instructions, or download them from the maker.
- Look for the BS EN 1888:2018+A1:2022 label on the frame or seat.
- Check for recalls with Trading Standards.
- Tug badges and poppers, and check the harness stitching and frame joins for cracks.

FAQ
Is it safe to buy a second-hand pushchair?
It can be, if you inspect it in person. Which? advises checking the fold, wheels, brakes, harness stitching and frame for cracks, and looking for the BS EN 1888 safety label. Check for recalls too.
Should I buy a second-hand car seat?
RoSPA says never to buy one second-hand unless you're sure of its history. Car seats are "one hit" products, and a crash or even a drop can damage them in ways you can't see. A seat from a relative or friend you know well is different, if you know its full history and it hasn't been damaged. Never use one that's been in an accident.
Where can I buy pre-loved baby gear in the UK?
